Hi all,

I guess it's time to update the personal website seeing as it has been over two years. We are just back from California where we visited Disneyland for five days. I was presenting a paper at the Institute of Navigation while the kids and Suzanne were navigating the Disney Parks across the street. It's a good time to visit as the crowds are way down and you can pretty much get on any ride without waiting in line. Elena (4 years old) went on Space Mountain, basically a rollercoster in the dark. I think it gave her a prretty good scare but now that we are safely back in Colorado, she says it was her favorite ride.

After Disneyland, we headed up towards Van Nuys to visit Allison and Kerrin in thier new house built ca. 1950. Elena did not like the back yard at night, she was worried about bears, in LA. We had a great time visiting there and the weather was perfect so we snagged some beach time out at Malibu on Saturday.

Things I have learned at the movies:
  • If you are blonde and pretty, it is possible to become a world expert on nuclear fission at the age of 22.
  • Honest and hard-working policemen are traditionally gunned down three days before their retirement.
  • A detective can only solve a case once he has been suspended from duty.
  • You are very likely to survive any battle in any war unless you make the mistake of showing someone a picture of your sweetheart back home.
  • All bombs are fitted with electronic timing devices with large red readouts so you know exactly when they're going to go off.
In Paris they just simply opened their eyes and stared when we spoke to them in French! We never did succeed in making those idiots understand their own language.

Hi all,

We are back in Breckenridge after visiting with Suzanne's family in California for Thanksgiving. Elena & Alyssa really enjoyed pushing each other's buttons, the best  being when they accused each other of using "their words". Henry, the engineer, deep fried the turkeys using an even more elaborate block and tackle system than in past years. The overhead crane feature was especially innovative.

David Letterman had a pretty good observation on the presidential conundrum: "Right now, Al Gore hasn't won the election. George Bush hasn't won the election either. So why don't we quit while we're ahead". Watching their actions in Florida, I have to agree. With the injection of lawyers to decide who won, no matter who wins, 1/2 the country will feel the election was stolen from them. I wish these guys would think about the country and not just their own desires.

In any event, I've been somewhat remiss in updating the photos at our website so here are two groups of  new ones.

Regards, Logan.

Hi all,

We got a bunch of photos back and here they are.

Regards, Logan

I was walking across a bridge one day, and i saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. so i ran over and said "stop! don't do it!" "Why shouldn't I?" he said. I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!" He said, "Like what?" I said, "Well...are you religious or atheist?" He said, "Religious." I said, "Me too! Are you Christian or Buddhist?" He said, "Christian." I said, "Me too! Are you Catholic or Protestant?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me too! Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?" He said, "Baptist!" I said, "Wow! Me too! Are you Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord?" He said, "Baptist Church of God!" I said, "Me too! Are you original Baptist Church of God, or are you Reformed Baptist Church of God?" He said, "Reformed Baptist Church of God!" I said, "Me too! Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1915?" He said, "Reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1915!" I said, "Die, heretic scum", and pushed him off. -- Emo Phillips

elena_spoon Well, everybody is back in Breckenridge for the big snow. April Showers bring May Powder so the ski resorts have closed and the snowplow drivers are off in the Bahama's. Suzanne and the kids were off to California while Logan and his mother were in London and Ireland seeing the sights. Ireland really is as green as they say and Guinness is not so much a drink as a national institution. Maggie is getting ready for her two year old birthday and is beginning to talk in sentences but with a little mispronunciation. Suzanne's car got stuck in the snow and Maggie's comment was "Mommie's car suck". Dad agreed as he was digging it out. Elena is still determined not to crawl or do anything that involves being on her belly. Rather than get her a chair, maybe we should get her a couch so she can be a potato. As always, click on the photo for the pictures.

From the Internet:

Jose is 17 years old and lives in Mexico. All his life he has wanted to see an American baseball game. So, one night he sneaks across the border and hitch-hikes his way to the second game of the World Series. He tries to get in, but since he doesn't have a ticket, the security guard won't let him in. Jokingly, the guard tells poor Jose to climb the flagpole if he wants to see the game. And that's what Jose did.

Well, it was time to start the game, and everyone stood up to sing the National Anthem. Jose watches the game in amazement and joy. When it was over, he slid down the flagpole and hitch-hikes his way back over the border to Mexico.

When he finally gets home, all his friends ask him, "So, Jose, how was eet, the baseball game?" And Jose replies, "Eet was wonderful, amigos. The people in America are so kind! The first thing they did, even before they start the game, was to ask me, `Jose, can you see?'"

Winter continues with some of the best skiing of the season over the last week. Fabulous snow and nobody up here. Still, it's getting on towards spring; Keystone sank their Zamboni in the lake. It's not supposed to be a tradition but they seem to do it just about every year. In case you don't know, a Zamboni is that thing that looks like a street sweeper used to smooth out the ice for ice skaters by spraying hot water on it. Apparently they weigh several tons and sink very rapidly when they break through the ice. At Keystone, I think they require the driver to take a swimming test before they get the job.

On the home front, we've decided that we need a bigger house so we are in the process of selling this one. We have a good offer with lease back provisions through June of 1999. Hopefully we get to closing without any hiccups. We don't know exactly where we are going to move to but we've considered building up here, moving to Colorado Springs or perhaps California.

If you havn't clicked on the picture at the right, you might be wondering why we need a bigger house. A clue; it's not a bean. For the rest of the story, click on the "bean".

Finally, Josh  the dog got busted for chasing the animal control officer. He usually doesn't chase anything (he's 16 years old) but on this day he decided to chase one car. Guess which one? Here's his citation for meritorious chase: click here

So far it's been a quiet winter with not much snow; those darn Californians keep sucking all the water out of the clouds so all we get is sunshine and beautiful weather. It's really terrible.

We've been adding a room to the house by making the upstairs2 loft accessible using a spiral staircase. Logan's going to move part of his office up there to convert the current office into a bedroom. Lofts are fine as bedrooms until you get an active baby downstairs.

Maggie is continuing to grow like a Bonsai; she hasn't put on much weight for the last three months. My suspicion is that she is so active she can't eat enough to keep up. She's got four teeth now and is probably going to get weened real soon. I hear "OWWW, NO BITING!!" at least once a day. Well, that's all for now. Today's thought for today:

January 17, 1998:
Over the Thanksgiving holiday we spent two weeks in the San Francisco California area visiting with relatives. First we spent a few days with Bob (Suzanne's older brother) and his wife Gayle in Sebastopol California. They had seven new puppies about 4 weeks old that were (are?) extremely cute. Here is a picture of one of them. Seeing the mayhem they caused, we had to wonder about those folks who had septapuplets about the same time. We then went down to Scott's Valley to stay with Henry (another one of Suzanne's older brothers) & Susan for Thanksgiving dinner. Suzanne's whole family was there and we ate too much. Afterwards, we ate some more.

Finally, we headed into San Francisco and met up with my cousin Rob and his ex-girlfriend (now fiance) Cheryl. We met up with a bunch of their friends some of whom live up on Mount Tam.We went hiking out in Muir Woods with them but Rob led us directly to a beer garden not on the maps so we stopped in and had a couple. The Tourist Club has been there for over a hundred years so they are grandfathered in. Later, we rejoined the party for some wonderful potluck food.

My Dad and his wife Amy were also in town and we had a lot of fun with them. We were all staying in the Union Square area so each morning we'd meet for breakfast at Sear's, one of the best breakfast spots in SF and plan our day. We went out to Alcatraz and were pleasantly surprised by how interesting a place it is. The audio tour was outstanding and well worth the cost. The prison cells were quite childproof and now that Maggie is crawling, I'd like to get one for her.

Returning home, we have settled in for the winter and some skiing. It is finally beginning to snow heavily and Maggie is all signed up for day care once a week. Everyone is doing well and we hope to see you soon. For more pictures of Maggie, click on the Chairman of the board at right.

Heavy snow up here in the mountains today. My sister Laurel is up here visiting between traveling assignments. She's a Physical Terrorist who takes 3 month assignments around the country to fill in at locations where they are short. She's hoping to end up in Western Massachussets for her next assignment. In the meantime, we'll try and get in some cross country skiing later today. Some of the local downhill ski resorts are open but we are holding off waiting for Copper Mountain to open. We got their $295 Hooky passes good Monday through Friday all season; what a deal and there aren't any bugs this time of year. See you out there on the slopes. In the meantime, here are some pictures from our trip to Yellowstone last year, just click on Suzanne. We also have a few photos of our neighbourhood. Suz

October 8, 1997:

First snow up here in the mountains today, winter has arrived. So much for planting bulbs today. Good thing we've been doing plenty of hiking. We went up to Hanging Lake near Glenwood Springs last week with every intention of jumping into the hot springs later but were so enchanted with the waterfalls that we stayed up at the falls and watched the trout. The Denver Hotel in Glenwood now has a brewpub with pretty good food so we ate there.

September 26, 1997:
Suzanne is back from visiting her family out in California where she and Maggie had a fun and relaxing time. The Aspen leaves are currently at their peak so we will be going out to take pictures and put them in a box with the rest of the Aspen pictures from years past. We will try and post some to the web so everyone can see. Logan is just back from Washington D.C. where he was teaching a course on GPS to about 40 people. On Sunday he went to the Corcoran gallery to see the Gordon Parks retrospective. Parks was a Life magazine staff photographer among other things and this exhibit is well worth seeing. It will be in D.C. through 11 January 1998 and then moves on to the Minnesota Museum of Art from Feb 14 through May 14 1998. As always, click on the baby for photos. Movie Star

June 9, 1997:
We are now at our permanent residence up in the mountains of Colorado; Breckenridge to be specific. We've been down in Denver having a baby for the last month. Everybody is healthy & happy if not well rested. Laurel, Logan's sister has been visiting for the last week and has been helping with the baby and nursery setup.
